How to Export Used Vehicles Already Registered in Cambodia

Vehicles that have cleared customs and are legally registered in Cambodia may be eligible for export, subject to an assessment of their specific status. While having cleared customs and possessing a valid vehicle registration document are essential prerequisites, they do not guarantee automatic approval; final authorization rests with the Cambodian Customs authorities and other relevant regulatory bodies.

Eligible Vehicles

Generally, vehicles eligible for export must meet the following criteria:

- All applicable Cambodian import taxes and duties have been paid.

- The vehicle is duly registered, with valid registration documentation.

- The Vehicle Identification Number (VIN), engine details, and registration records are consistent.

- The identity of the owner and the vehicle’s ownership status are clear.

- There are no customs holds or other legal restrictions that would preclude export.

Before formal processing, our company will review the vehicle documentation and assess whether the vehicle meets the basic requirements for import and registration in the destination country.

Required Documentation

Vehicle owners are typically required to provide:

- The original vehicle registration document.

- Proof of the owner’s identity or passport details.

- Photographs of the vehicle (front, side, and rear views, as well as the VIN).

- Any additional documentation required by customs, such as proof of tax payment, transaction records, or authorization letters.

If the vehicle is registered to a company, or if the process is handled by an agent, additional documents—such as company registration papers, a power of attorney, and the identification of the authorized representative—may be required. The final list of required documents will be determined based on the preliminary review of each individual case.

Processing Time

When all documentation is complete, the vehicle’s status is clear, and the review process proceeds without complications, the export application and in-country procedures in Cambodia typically take approximately 2 to 3 weeks. This estimate is based on standard operational experience and excludes time required for submitting supplementary documents, undergoing special inspections, waiting for shipping space, dealing with schedule changes, or completing customs clearance at the destination port. This does not constitute a guaranteed timeline.

Processing Steps

1. The client submits the vehicle registration documents, owner information, and photographs of the vehicle.

2. Our company conducts a preliminary review of the vehicle and its eligibility for entry into the destination country.

3. We organize the documentation as required and submit the export application to the General Department of Customs and Excise of Cambodia.

4. Upon receiving approval, the vehicle is transported to a designated export terminal.

5. We coordinate with customs authorities for the inspection of the vehicle and its documentation. 6. Following inspection and release, arrange for containerization or handover for roll-on/roll-off (RoRo) shipment.

7. Complete export declarations, ocean freight booking, and the coordination of bill of lading documentation.

Can taxes be refunded for the export of vehicles on which duties have already been paid?

Under current standard practices for this type of vehicle export, import duties and taxes already paid in Cambodia are not automatically refunded if the vehicles are subsequently exported.
